Brown and Raman Publish Study in Neuron

August 8, 2018
In the study, "Sensorimotor Integration and Amplification of Reflexive Whisking by Well-Timed Spiking in the Cerebellar Corticonuclear Circuit,"  published in Neuron, Spencer Brown and Indira Raman investigate cerebellar signals that contribute to whisker movements in mice. Brainstem motor commands are sent to Purkinje cells, which inhibit cerebellar output neurons, but brief sensory input produces precisely timed Purkinje cell spiking that alternates with rapid firing in the cerebellar nuclei, increasing cerebellar output and amplifying sensory-evoked reflexive whisker movements.

How Messing With Our Biological Clock Impacts Well-Being

October 11, 2017
Professor Fred Turek discusses, on WSFU Public Media News, what happens to the general well-being of individuals who go against their own natural biological clocks. "What happens is that you get a total de-synchronization of the clocks within us, which may be underlying many of the chronic diseases we face in our society", Turek explains in response what happens when individuals mess with the body's sleep-wake cycle.

Professor Ravi Allada Asks, ‘What Makes Our Internal Clocks Tick?’

October 11, 2017
Professor Ravi Allada, was asked to speak on WTTW's program, Chicago Tonight, about internal circadian clocks. “Basically, the circadian clock acts like an internal alarm clock. That alarm clock inside your body goes off and it basically wakes you up at the same time every day", Allada explains. The interview goes on to discusses sleep-related studies and Nobel Prize winning research.
